Mild Steel (S235 / 300WA)
Mild Steel
The workhorse of sheet metal fabrication. Mild steel is the most affordable material and the easiest to cut, weld and paint. It rusts without a protective coating, but that's rarely a problem when powder coated or painted.
Best for: enclosures, brackets, frames, machine guards, general fabrication, any part that will be painted or powder coated.
Avoid when: the part will be exposed to moisture without a coating, or when hygiene is critical (food / medical environments).
Stainless Steel 304
Stainless Steel 304
The most widely used stainless steel grade worldwide. 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, giving it excellent corrosion resistance and a bright, attractive finish that requires no coating. It's significantly more expensive than mild steel but often eliminates finishing costs entirely.
Best for: food preparation surfaces, catering equipment, outdoor signage, marine environments, hygienic enclosures, decorative panels.
Avoid when: budget is tight and the part will be painted anyway — mild steel with powder coat achieves similar results at a fraction of the cost.

Chrome Steel 430 (Ferritic Stainless)
Chrome Steel 430
A ferritic (magnetic) stainless steel with 17% chromium and no nickel. It sits between mild steel and 304 in both price and corrosion resistance. It's magnetic, which makes it useful for applications where magnetism matters, and it machines and forms well.
Best for: kitchen appliance panels, whitegoods, light outdoor use, applications needing a stainless appearance at lower cost than 304.
Avoid when: chloride exposure is a concern (coastal environments, salt spray) — 430 is less resistant than 304 in those conditions.
Aluminium 5052-H32
Aluminium 5052-H32
Aluminium is roughly one-third the weight of steel, which makes it the go-to choice when weight is critical. 5052-H32 is the most common sheet alloy — good formability, excellent corrosion resistance and moderate strength. It does not rust and develops a natural oxide layer that protects the surface.
Best for: aerospace and automotive parts, electronics enclosures, signage, any application where weight saving matters.
Avoid when: the part requires welding by someone without aluminium MIG/TIG experience — aluminium welding requires different technique and consumables than steel.
Brass 360
Brass 360
Brass is a copper-zinc alloy with an instantly recognisable warm gold colour. It's used primarily for decorative applications, electrical components and plumbing fittings. It's one of the most expensive sheet metals and is not typically used for structural fabrication.
Best for: decorative panels, signage, jewellery components, electrical contacts, plaques, interior design elements.
Avoid when: structural strength or budget efficiency is the priority — brass is a specialty material.
Which Material Should You Choose?
Here's a simple decision guide:
- Indoor, painted or powder coated → Mild Steel. Cheapest, easiest, most versatile.
- Food, hygiene, outdoor without coating → Stainless 304. Best all-round corrosion resistance.
- Stainless look, lower budget, not coastal → Chrome 430. Good middle ground.
- Weight critical → Aluminium 5052. One-third the weight of steel at similar strength.
- Decorative, gold colour → Brass 360. Premium appearance for display applications.
